By Marion Dear, Lower School Teacher
This summer, I will return to Heritage Academy for 3 weeks. This is the school founded in Ghana by our very own Kwesi Koomson, a math teacher in the Upper School. Thanks to the generosity and voracious reading habits of Westtown families, Heritage has one of the largest libraries in Ghana. This summer I will use this library, as well as my experience with Columbia University’s Reading Workshop, to launch a reading program at Heritage Academy. I will work with a pilot group of students who will participate in my Reading Seminar every day. I will also teach Heritage faculty how to assess the reading levels of their students so that when I leave in August, the program will continue without me. After school, I will help to support the students who travel to Ghana to volunteer at the Heritage Summer Reading Institute.
I am very excited to be returning to this wonderful school after four years. I sure hope I can make a difference there!
