Lisa Cromley’s sixth grade students are participating in the 2015 Global Read Aloud. This year’s book is Fish by L.S. Matthews. Fish follows the life a family fleeing conflict. Lisa is combining Matthews’ story with a recent article in Scholastic Scope Magazine on refugee children. The article “Shattered Lives” looks at the stories of several children fleeing the conflict in Syria. While listening to Fish, Westtown students will be writing their own blogs and, using Twitter as one of their connection platforms, creating tweets related to what they are learning. Already they have had a rich discussion on why the main character’s gender remains unknown throughout the story. Lisa’s students will be connecting with her partner teacher and students in Iowa to share what they are learning. Throughout this unit, Lisa will be challenging her students to consider what 6th graders might do to make a difference as change makers.
